In case you missed Iggy and the Stooges’ tribute show in April, the Ron Asheton Foundation is selling Ron Asheton Tribute t-shirts and posters for a limited time only. All proceeds will go to the Foundation.

Iggy and the Stooges have booked two concerts at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA, on September 12th and September 13th! Tickets will go on sale on Sunday, May 15th at Ticketmaster.

Here are exclusive pictures from last night’s Ron Asheton tribute concert, photographed by David Dominic, Jr. In a review of the show, AnnArbor.com wrote: “Security must have had a collective coronary when Pop invited the crowd to “get on stage and dance with The Stooges.” What looked like a couple of hundred people took advantage of the opportunity and rushed up front. It was a mob scene where pure anarchy seemed to reign … The show was LOUD. There were some 30 speakers aimed at the crowd, not including the onstage monitors. Raw power indeed.”

Just before the show ended, Pop sat down on the edge of the stage and reminisced about Asheton as he and guitarist James Williamson performed a special acoustic tribute song. “I have to thank Ron for Iggy,” he said. “When I wanted to start a band, Ron was the first guy who would get behind me. … He had a gift, sort of a charm — his compositions were very simple but very memorable.”

Pop also expressed his appreciation to the audience, and Stooges’ fans in general. “Thanks for showing up … thanks for giving me a life,” he added.

Following last night’s tribute concert for Ron Asheton, Rolling Stone wrote: “Near the end of the Stooges’ tribute concert to their late guitarist Ron Asheton at Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater last night, Iggy Pop did something virtually unprecedented: he sat down, hushed the crowd, and addressed them in a calm, measured tone that was clearly the voice of Jim Osterberg – and not his psychotic alter-ego. “I need to thank Ron,” he said. “He sort of peed this beautiful music all over me. When I started a band Ron was the first guy who got behind me. I owe him…I know he’s trying to flick ashes on my head from heaven right now.”

Iggy and James Williamson then played a composition entitled “Ron’s Tune” on the acoustic guitar, singing, “This is your requiem. I never got to say goodbye. You were my friend. I’ll always think of you again.”

The magazine added that Deniz Tek “played ‘TV Eye,’ ‘Loose,’ ‘Dirt,’ and ‘Real Good Time’ like he was possessed by Asheton’s very soul. It was incredible, and he seemed hugely honored to have the opportunity. Even more amazing was the orchestra joining the group in the back of the stage for the Fun House material. It was the perfect way to demonstrate how timeless and beautiful Asheton’s songs are.”

If it wasn’t already clear to those who have seen or heard Iggy Pop during the past four decades, his latest moves confirm he’s not one to back down from a challenge.

The punk pioneer and sonic provocateur returns to the Michigan town that spawned his band the Stooges to pay tribute to fallen band mate Ron Asheton in an ambitious, eclectic show in Ann Arbor. The Tuesday concert comes on the heels of a surprise appearance April 7 on “American Idol,” where the 63-year-old Pop sang “Real Wild Child,” writhed shirtless among enthusiastic contestants and shimmied up to host Jennifer Lopez.

Despite the differences, the two appearances underscore a career of avoiding the expected. For the Michigan show, there’s also determination born of a desire to give his late friend a proper musical send-off. He’s excited to hear and play Stooges’ songs with the band as well as other musicians such as Henry Rollins, and even a classical ensemble.
